Types of Aid

Financial Aid basically consists of 3 different types of aid.

  • Grants/Scholarships
    • Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money—financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid.
    • Grants/scholarships are awarded based on various factors such as merit (academics), financial need (determined by the FAFSA), or various other reasons.

  • Work-Study
    • Work programs are awarded through the financial aid office.
    • Student must work to earn the money.

  • Loans
    • Loans can either be taken out in the student's name or the parent's name, depending on the type of loan.
    • Loans must be paid back.
    • Some loans can be awarded through the financial aid office, while others are initiated by the student or parent.
